guilt   layered   beneath   him ,     _{the   night   still   fresh   in   his   mind .     her   words ,     her   expression     ——     it   doesn’t   settle   well   beneath   him ,     causes   a   lump   to   form   in   the   middle   of   his   throat .     he   tears   his   gaze   off   sam ,     a   hand   coming   to   rest   against   the   back   of   his   neck   as   he   swallows   the   small   lump .          ❛     it   was   just   a   prank ,     sam .     it   was   meant   to   be   harmless   fun .     ❜          it   wasn’t   supposed   to   result   in   two   of   his   friends   going   missing ,     death   the   only   possibility   and   out   come .          ❛     i   wasn’t   thinking ,     okay !     i   was   just     .  .  .     going   along   with   it .     ❜}

          _{❝     just   —   ‘ going   along   with   it? ‘     ❞          she   reproduces   the   words,    without   truly   paying   attention   to   their   meaning,    for   what   she   knows   the   whole   plan   was   nothing   but   a   MEAN   plot.    the   tone   of   voice   mimics   the   other's   as   much   as   possible,    trying   to   remain   the   numbness   and   apathy   she   senses   once   is   said.    revolting,    to   say   the   least.}  

          _{mind   no   longer   belongs   to   herself,    consciousness   taking   away   the   calmness   the   girl   fought   deeply   to   keep   intact :    the   rage   that   comes   like   a   wave   in   the   ocean   twists   her   actions   and   words.          ❝     that   was   cruel.    what   you   did   to   her   was   CRUEL   —     ❞          a   pause.    composure   attempts   to   return   as   a   deep   breath   is   taken;    the   oxygen   that   travels   within   her   lungs   seems   to   bring   a   type   of   temperance   she   has   never   experienced   before.    fury   and   exasperation   turns   into   disappointment   and   dismay.}          ❝     and   i’m   sure,    deep   down,    you   knew   it.    from   the   start.     ❞
